The Schweisfurths – what an enormous change:

from famous factory-farming empire “Herta”, to organic-farming “Hermannsdorf”

Once he created the largest meat factory in Germany, “Herta” in Herten. 25000 pigs were killed in a week by his order. His family took him beyond measure. So he went in 1980 to the ultra-modern pig farm with slatted floors and looked at, how a man can breed  5000 pigs all by his own: The stables are dark. The tails of the animals are cutted off and their teeth ground down, so they don’t nibble each other out of boredom. The animals stand shoulder to shoulder and at the slightest disturbance they fall down dead by stress. Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth can’t stand this any longer. This was not a quality, as stressed animals pour adrenalin. The meat is tough. Also he lacked appreciation for animals and nature. He sold his meat empire to Nestlé and started everything new and completely different.

Located 40 km from Munich away, in Herrmannsdorf, he bought a farm and started to breed animals the ecological way now. Together with his two sons and his daughter, he has built a small organic empire during the past 25 Years. His pigs are allowed to wallow in the dirt, taps scratch on the dunghill and  cows pluck in the pasture fresh grass. The animals grow up naturally and they live longer .

Today he orders 80 pigs to kill per week and let them treated by the slaughter as in former times:

The sausage is pressed into the intestines of swine and not in the particular artificial casings. The animals and what they give is valued. They are not stressed. The quality is excellent. A scavenger is indeed considerably more expensive, but it does not crumple up in the pan and it is not tough, because the animals are well – now ‘s right again …
